I've been getting into action figure customization lately, and I'm curious what more experienced customizers think - is it generally easier to customize vintage figures versus modern ones?
It seems like older figures, especially things from the 80s,are often simpler in their construction. Fewer points of articulation might make them easier to disassemble and reassemble, and maybe the plastic is more forgiving when it comes to painting or using solvents. On the other hand, finding parts in decent condition can be a challenge.
Modern figures have the advantage of readily available replacements and a wider range of articulation for more dynamic poses. However, that articulation also seems like it makes them more complex to take apart, and some modern plastics seem less receptive to certain paints. Anyone have strong opinions or experiences either way? What factors do you consider when deciding what kind of figure to use for a customization project?
