Been reading some interesting arguments lately suggesting that bike helmets for adults should be banned, and it's made me rethink some assumptions. The core idea seems to be that mandatory or even strongly encouraged helmet use shifts responsibility away from drivers and onto cyclists. If drivers know cyclists are wearing helmets, they might be less cautious, leading to more accidents in the first place. Essentially,it's about prioritizing road design and driver behavior over individual protective gear.

It's a counterintuitive argument, because obviously helmets can protect against head injuries in an accident. But proponents suggest that focusing on helmet bans (or at least de-emphasizing helmets) would push for safer infrastructure like bike lanes and lower speed limits in urban areas, ultimately leading to a greater net reduction in cyclist injuries and fatalities.Places with high cycling rates and fewer helmet laws, like the Netherlands, frequently enough get brought up.I'm definitely not convinced either way yet, but it's an interesting outlook I hadn't considered. what are your thoughts? Does the focus on helmets distract from addressing the root causes of cyclist accidents?
