I've seen a lot of DIY epoxy flooring projects popping up, and while the finished pictures often look great, I think there's a real undercurrent of risk that people aren't fully considering. We mostly see the success stories, but what about the multitude of less-then-perfect outcomes? The cost savings might seem attractive upfront next to professional installation, but the potential for notable rework due to improper surface preparation, mixing errors, or applying in unsuitable temperatures can quickly eat into those savings, and even exceed the cost of hiring a pro in the first place.
Beyond the financial risk, there's the health and safety aspect. Epoxy resins contain perhaps harmful chemicals, and proper ventilation and protective gear are absolutely necessary. Are most DIYers truly equipped with the knowledge and equipment to handle these materials safely and confidently? A poorly ventilated garage coupled with inadequate respirator use could lead to serious health issues.
there's the longevity factor. A professionally installed epoxy floor, with proper preparation and submission, should last for years.A DIY job, even if it looks good initially, might be more prone to chipping, peeling, or discoloration over time, ultimately requiring more frequent and costly repairs or even a complete replacement. I'm curious to hear if anyone disagrees, or has learned these lessons the hard way. Anyone had a DIY epoxy project go sideways?
