so, I was reading a thread breaking down the "old money" aesthetic for guys, adn it got me thinking. It's not just about wearing expensive stuff, right? The explanation talked about well-fitting clothes, quality fabrics like linen and cashmere (even if sourced secondhand),and a generally understated, timeless style.

But what I'm curious about is this: isn't a lot of it performative, nonetheless of actual wealth? Someone can buy a Barbour jacket and a pair of loafers, but still completely miss the point if they don't also cultivate the mannerisms and air of ease that the aesthetic is supposed to project. Similarly, you could technically have "old money" and dress like a slob.

Dose anyone else think the emphasis is frequently enough placed too heavily on the surface level, while the underlying social cues and unspoken codes are what truly separate someone who's inherently "old money" from someone who's just mimicking the style? What even are some of those less obvious social cues? Maybe it's the casual confidence, or the unconcern for displaying wealth.I'm interested to hear others' thoughts.
