So, I was reading that ELI5 about "smart" and connected gear, and it got me thinking about how much of that "smartness" is actually useful versus just... there. I mean, does my fridge really need to tell me I'm out of milk,or would I notice eventually?
It seems like most "smart" devices now just means they have some kind of sensor,a way to connect to the internet (usually WiFi or Bluetooth),and an app. But the real question is, what problem is that solving? Is it automating a tedious task, genuinely improving efficiency, or just collecting data for some corporation?
I guess a connected thermostat that learns your schedule and adjusts temperatures automatically is a good example of genuinely useful smart tech. Whereas a connected toothbrush that tells me how well I brushed my teeth feels a bit superfluous. What are some examples of truly smart and connected gear you guys have come across, that actually improve your life instead of just adding another notification to your phone?
