I saw an ELI5 earlier asking about the different stud finder technologies. it got me thinking about how much they've improved. I remember using those old magnetic ones that were basically glorified, very weak magnets that maybe detected a nail. Now we have capacitance and radar stud finders.

The ELI5 explanations touched on this, but I'm curious about people's real-world experiences. Does the type of wall make a HUGE difference? I've always used capacitance-based ones, and they work mostly okay on drywall. But I've heard they can be unreliable on lath and plaster walls, and that radar ones are better in that case. Anyone have experience using different types on various wall types? Does it really matter that much,or is it mostly marketing hype? I'm also wondering if spending more money actually gets you a more accurate or consistent stud finder,or if the cheaper ones are "good enough" for basic home improvement tasks like hanging pictures or mounting shelves.
