So I saw an ELI5 explaining circuit breakers, and while the core function was clear (preventing overload), it got me thinking about DIY electrical work. It feels like a lot of people probably underestimate just how crucial understanding breakers is before touching any wiring. You really need to know the amperage limits of your circuits before plugging in that new power tool or even adding a light fixture.
Ignoring that? Well, at best, you're constantly tripping breakers. At worst…fire. I tripped one accidentally the other day when I had a space heater and a hairdryer running on the same circuit. Nothing major, just annoying. But what if instead of tripping, the breaker failed? That's the terrifying part.
Dose anyone have any good resources for really understanding how to properly calculate load and choose the right breaker for a new circuit you're adding? And beyond just knowing the basics, what are some common mistakes people make that lead to dangerous situations? I'm always looking to learn more and avoid setting my house ablaze.
