I saw an ELI5 post asking about why blankets are such a big thing in "CozyCribTales" (presumably a subreddit or genre about creating cozy spaces). It got me thinking beyond just the obvious answer of physical warmth. I think a huge part of it is psychological. Blankets provide a feeling of security and comfort,a kind of tactile hug that can reduce anxiety.
Consider how many people find comfort in weighted blankets, or remember their favorite childhood blankie. It's not just about being warm, it's about feeling safe and secure. The association with warmth often extends to feeling safe and looked after, going back to early childhood and being cared for.
Beyond the individual level, I wonder if blankets also signify creating a sanctuary – a clearly defined, personal space where one can relax and detach from stressors. Are there other seemingly simple items that carry such strong psychological weight in our idea of what makes a space "cozy"? What other factors contribute to the feeling beyond just the physical sensation of warmth and softness?
