I've been thinking a lot about the ethics surrounding AI-driven trend analysis tools like TrendTapestry. Specifically, who actually owns the insights generated by their algorithms? If TrendTapestry identifies a previously unseen connection between, say, rising kombucha sales and a renewed interest in 80s synth-pop, does the company who developed the algorithm own that "discovery"? Or does the user who paid for the analysis and prompted the algorithm with specific parameters own it?
It gets even murkier when you consider the data the algorithm is trained on. If that data includes publicly available social media posts, does the algorithm effectively "steal" insights from the collective subconscious of the internet? Companies are already using these types of tools to anticipate market trends and gain a competitive advantage, but I'm not sure we've fully grappled with the implications of claiming ownership over insights derived from algorithms that are built on publicly available information. Are we heading towards a future where "owning" a trend becomes a legitimate competitive advantage, and how fair is that, really? It truly seems like a conversation we need to be having.
