Been thinking a lot lately about the ethics of collecting vintage toys, specifically when those toys are sourced from developing countries. On one hand, it seems like providing a market for these items could inject some much-needed cash into local economies. Peopel find old toys in attics or at local markets, adn suddenly they have a buyer from overseas willing too pay more than they might otherwise get.
Though, there's also the potential for exploitation. Are we, as collectors from wealthier countries, potentially taking advantage of people who may not fully understand the value of what they possess? Could the increased demand drive up prices locally, making these items less accessible to the people who grew up with them or who might want to preserve their cultural heritage? And what about the environmental impact of shipping these items across the globe? It's a complex issue with no easy answers, and I'm curious to hear other people's perspectives. Is there a responsible way to participate in this market, or is it inherently problematic?
