My worst gear failure turned into my most unforgettable repair story. Deep in the backcountry, miles from the nearest road, the sole of my hiking boot completely detached. Not a clean break, mind you, but shredded. I was facing a long trek out with a floppy, useless boot.

Luckily, I carry a small repair kit, but even then, I thought I was screwed. I ended up using a combination of duct tape (lots of it), some cord I had for my tent guylines, and the metal buckle from a broken backpack strap to create a makeshift binding that held the sole somewhat in place. It wasn't pretty, and I had to re-tape it every few hours, but it got me back to civilization.

It really made me think about the importance of being prepared for unexpected gear failures. What's the most creative repair you've had to make in the wilderness to save a trip? Any tips for essential items to carry in a repair kit that I might be missing?
