I've been seeing more and more about 3D-printed houses, and I'm curious what everyone thinks about their potential to become mainstream, especially the DIY aspect. We're talking about potentially printing your own home!

Obviously, there are hurdles. The cost of the printers themselves is still high, and the materials need to be affordable and readily available. Plus, there's the permitting process. Right now, building codes aren't really set up for this technology, and getting approval could be a nightmare. Think about needing specialized, potentially expensive, concrete mixes versus readily-available lumber, and the approvals needed for each.

However, imagine a future where a family could buy a plot of land and, with the right equipment and some training, print a structurally sound and energy-efficient home in a fraction of the time it takes to build traditionally. It could revolutionize affordable housing and even disaster relief efforts. Are we realistically looking at this becoming common in the next 10-20 years, or are there just too many barriers to overcome? What needs to happen for DIY 3D-printed houses to truly take off?
