Been seeing a lot more buzz about using biodegradable materials for DIY projects lately. Stuff like mycelium bricks, hempcrete, and even bioplastics built into frameworks. On one hand, the sustainability angle is super appealing, especially for things like sheds, garden structures, and smaller home additions. Imagine a world where you coudl basically compost your old shed instead of tearing it down and sending it to a landfill!
However, I'm also a bit skeptical about the practicality and longevity of these materials, especially outside of controlled lab conditions. How resistant are they really to the elements? What kind of specialized tools or techniques are required for construction? And, realistically, is the cost competitive with conventional lumber and concrete? I'm curious if anyone has actually experimented with these materials in their own DIY projects, and what their experiences have been like. Are we actually looking at a viable future for enduring building, or is it mostly just hype right now? what are the biggest hurdles to overcome before biodegradable construction becomes mainstream for DIYers?
