I was reading about 19th-century explorers and got to thinking about their luggage. We frequently enough picture them braving the wilderness, but rarely consider the practicalities of hauling their gear. It's fascinating to imagine what those massive steamer trunks held – scientific instruments, changes of clothes, preserved specimens, maybe even firearms. They definitely weren't rolling suitcases!
Compared to modern backpacking equipment, the luggage these adventurers relied on seems incredibly cumbersome. I wonder how much careful planning went into deciding what to bring, knowing that every ounce mattered. Presumably, the lack of space also shaped what observations and collections they prioritized. It’s interesting to consider how much more accessible exploration is today thanks to advancements in materials and pack design. What modern conveniences do you think explorers back then would have benefited from the most?
