I've been thinking a lot lately about what it truly means to be a polite and respectful man, and it's been a journey of self-reflection and conscious effort. It's not just about saying "please" and "thank you," although those are certainly foundational. For me, a big part of it was actively working on my listening skills. I realized I often interrupted or formulated my response while someone else was still talking, which is incredibly disrespectful, even if unintentional. I started focusing on truly hearing what people were saying, asking clarifying questions, and responding thoughtfully.
Another aspect I've been trying to improve is recognizing and addressing my own biases. We all have them, and they can unconsciously influence our interactions with others, leading to unfair assumptions or judgments. I've found resources online that offer frameworks for identifying and dismantling bias, and even just acknowledging that I am susceptible to them has been a huge step.
Ultimately, I think it boils down to a genuine desire to treat everyone with dignity and respect, nonetheless of their background or beliefs. It's an ongoing process, and I definitely still slip up sometimes, but I feel I'm making progress toward being a more mindful and considerate person. Has anyone else had similar experiences or tips to share on this topic? I'm always looking for ways to improve.
