Anyone else fascinated by the history behind our tech nostalgia? I'm on the hunt for some really good books that dive deep into why we get so sentimental about old gadgets, software, and internet culture. It's more than just missing simpler times; there's a whole psychological and sociological aspect to it.

Specifically,I'm curious if anyone has read good books analysing the boom in vintage computing and retrogaming. Think beyond surface-level "remember this?" articles and more towards exploring the reasons why these things have enduring appeal beyond simple functionality. Are there any complete works discussing how the limitations of older tech, ironically, fostered creativity and a sense of community that's harder to replicate today? Or perhaps books analyzing how the shift from the command line to the GUI changed our relationship with computers, and how that impacts nostalgia?

I'd especially appreciate recommendations on books that offer a critical outlook, looking at the good and the bad, rather than just pure rose-tinted reminiscing. There must be some great work out there academically analyzing our collective yearning for the dial-up era!
