I'm looking for some advice on a common creative struggle: how do you effectively balance your artistic vision with what your customers actually want (or think they want)? It feels like I'm constantly walking a tightrope between pushing boundaries and delivering something commercially viable.

Specifically, I'm a freelance graphic designer, and lately I've been getting feedback that my designs, while visually engaging, are "too quirky" or "don't immediatly communicate the brand message." I understand the concern – ultimately, I need to help my clients achieve their goals. Though, I also feel that watering down my style too much just leads to generic, forgettable work.

Has anyone else navigated this? What strategies have you found useful for striking that balance? Are there specific questions you ask clients upfront to better understand their expectations without stifling your creative process? maybe examples of how you've successfully convinced a client to take a risk on a more unconventional idea? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!
