I recently saw a documentary about people who test luggage for extreme conditions, like being tossed from airplanes or dragged behind vehicles. It got me thinking about how rarely we actually consider teh resilience of our luggage until it fails us at the worst possible moment. I've only ever really worried about size and weight restrictions at the airport, never really the structural integrity if it somehow ended up on a runway.
Has anyone had any seriously disastrous luggage experiences that genuinely surprised them? I'm curious if anyone has stories about luggage failing in unexpected ways – maybe a suitcase spontaneously combusting from friction during a long journey (okay, maybe not spontaneously combusting!), or a handle snapping off while navigating a notably crowded train platform. I'm particularly interested in hearing about what type of luggage it was (hard shell, soft shell, duffel bag, etc.) and what conditions contributed too the failure.
Beyond the stories, what features do you actively look for in luggage that indicate durability? Are there specific materials or construction techniques that give you confidence? I'm thinking of upgrading my current set and want to prioritize build quality over just aesthetics this time.
