I'm looking to deepen my understanding of the materials science behind gears – specifically, how different materials impact their performance, longevity, and suitability for various applications. I'm more interested in the "why" than just looking up material properties tables. Can anyone reccommend some good textbooks or resources that go into the underlying principles of gear material selection and behavior?

I've already got a decent grasp of basic materials science (stress/strain, heat treatment fundamentals, etc.). I'm hoping to find resources that delve into how these concepts specifically relate to gear design and failure modes like pitting, scoring, and wear. Maybe even stuff covering the newer materials being used in high-performance applications.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Bonus points if the materials have practical examples and aren't too heavy on the complex math. Thanks in advance!
