Anyone else feel like getting into vintage tech collecting is becoming financially impractical? It's not just teh rare stuff anymore; even relatively common items from the 80s and 90s are commanding ridiculous prices.I remember seeing working Commodore 64s at garage sales for next to nothing just a few years ago. Now, they're routinely going for hundreds online, even without the original box or manuals.
I understand the increased interest and the finite supply, but it's disheartening. It feels like a lot of the nostalgia collecting is being driven by speculation rather than genuine gratitude. are there any affordable avenues left for getting into this hobby, or is it strictly for those with deep pockets now? Beyond thrifting (which is increasingly picked over), are there any secrets to finding deals or focusing on less popular, yet still engaging, vintage tech niches? Maybe we should all start collecting vintage calculators - at least those are still relatively cheap… for now.
