I've been researching product design lately, specifically luggage, and it truly seems like a niche area. Does anyone have insights into breaking into that field? It feels like it requires a pretty specific skillset that overlaps between industrial design, textiles, and maybe even some mechanical engineering for the rolling or locking mechanisms. Are there specific companies known for their innovative luggage design programs that are good to target for internships or entry-level positions? Or would it be better to focus on building a strong general product design portfolio and then pivoting into luggage later? I'm wondering if it's even possible to specialize too early. It's tempting to design a really innovative suitcase concept for my portfolio, but I worry it might pigeonhole me.

Also curious about the software used.I assume typical CAD programs like Solidworks or Fusion 360, but are there any specialized tools for textiles or other materials used in luggage construction? Any advice or experiences you can share would be greatly appreciated!
