Just saw a really interesting comparative study on belt versus chain drives. It pretty clearly lays out the pros and cons, and it got me thinking about applications. Chain drives seem unbeatable for raw power transfer and durability in things like motorcycles and heavy machinery, right? But the noise and maintenance are definite drawbacks. Belts, conversely, are quieter and often require less maintenance, making them great for things like conveyor systems in warehouses.
The study highlighted the importance of the submission environment. A dusty or corrosive environment can really shorten the lifespan of a chain. Conversely, a belt can slip under high loads or extreme heat. Does anyone have experience with either failing unexpectedly in a specific application that really surprised you?
I'm especially curious to hear if anyone has experience with high-torque belt drives, because the study implied that newer belt technology is making them much more viable in traditionally chain-dominated areas.
