Been doing some research into insulation options for a small cabin project, and the natural vs. synthetic debate is definitely making my head spin. On one hand, natural options like sheep's wool and cellulose seem appealing from a sustainability standpoint. Plus, some claim they're better at managing moisture. However, the cost can be significantly higher upfront, and I've read concerns about potential pest issues if not properly treated.

Synthetics, like fiberglass or spray foam, are generally cheaper and offer excellent R-value for the price. They're also typically easier to install, which is a big factor for a DIY project. But the environmental impact of manufacturing them is a concern, and some can release harmful chemicals, especially during installation. It really feels like a trade-off between long-term sustainability and short-term cost and convenience.

Anyone have experience weighing these pros and cons in a real-world building project? I'm particularly interested in hearing about anyone's experience with natural insulation in colder climates and if the added cost was truly worth it in terms of energy savings and overall comfort. Are there any "hidden" downsides to either type that I might be overlooking?
