I've been thinking a lot lately about what constitutes "gentlemanly" behavior in different cultures. It's fascinating how much it varies. For example, in some cultures, offering a woman your seat on public transport is considered polite, while in others it might be seen as implying she's physically weak.

Then there's the whole area of gift-giving. what's considered an appropriate gift, how it should be presented, and even when to give it differs so drastically. In some Asian countries, such as, refusing a gift initially is expected, showing you're not greedy. But refusing it too many times could be seen as rude!

Beyond etiquette, deeper values also play a role. Does "gentlemanly" behavior emphasize stoicism and emotional restraint, or is it more about open displays of respect and affection? I'd love to hear examples of gentlemanly customs you've encountered in different cultures, and what they say about the underlying values of those societies. What's considered admirable in one place might be completely bewildering, or even offensive, somewhere else.
