I've been thinking about the long-term reliability of vintage toys, specifically comparing battery-operated and wind-up mechanisms. It truly seems like wind-up toys, while sometimes needing repairs to the spring or gears, generally fare better over decades of storage and occasional use. Fewer components to corrode or degrade compared to battery compartments and early electronics.

Does anyone else have experience with this? I have a wind-up robot from the 1950s that still shuffles along surprisingly well, although it's a bit creaky. On the other hand, a battery-operated space gun I inherited is completely dead, even after cleaning the battery contacts. The motor seems seized, and I suspect some internal component has failed.

Just wondering if this is a common experience or if I've just been unlucky with my battery-operated toys. Are there particular brands known for more robust construction in either category?
