I always wondered about this. is it purely based on market research and projected sales? Like, do they just crunch the numbers on past eBay sales and social media chatter to see which toys have the highest demand, regardless of actual play value? Or is there some nostalgia factor influencing decisions at the executive level?

It would be interesting to know if licensing plays a huge role. Like, maybe reissuing a specific vintage Star Wars figure is easier than reissuing a,say,Kenner M.A.S.K. vehicle even if both have similar demand, just as securing the Star Wars license is already in place. Also, how much do they consider the cost of retooling? If the original molds are lost or damaged, does that automatically disqualify a toy, no matter how popular it was? I'd love to hear from anyone who works in the industry!
