Been diving into smart home management lately, specifically the debate between cloud-based and on-premise systems, and it's got me thinking. Cloud solutions, like using a popular voice assistant to control everything, are super convenient and easy to set up. Plus, they frequently enough get regular updates with new features. But I'm also wary of relying on an internet connection and trusting all my data to a third party.
Conversely, an on-premise system, maybe using something like Home Assistant running on a local server, gives you way more control and privacy. You can tweak everything to your liking and don't have to worry (as much) about outages knocking out your entire smart home. But it definitely requires more technical no-how to set up and maintain.
What are your experiences with either approach? Has anyone regretted going all-in on one side or the other? I'm particularly curious about experiences with things like security camera footage being stored locally versus in the cloud. Trying to weigh the pros and cons for my own setup.
