I've been thinking about the differences between mass-market vintage toys and the handmade variety lately. It strikes me that while a mass-produced toy from the 60s, like a die-cast car, might be relatively common and affordable, a handmade wooden pull toy from the same era, even if simpler, frequently enough commands a higher price.

Is that just scarcity driving the value,or is there genuinely a difference in quality and perceived value? I can see the appeal of the unique character and craftsmanship of a handmade piece; it tells a different story than something churned out in a factory. You can often see individual maker's marks, or variations that speak too the item's unique creation.

but conversely, mass-market toys often benefited from better engineering and more durable materials, especially as plastics advanced. Plus, the nostalgia factor might be stronger for toys more people actually owned and played with. I'm curious to hear other people's thoughts on this. What do you prioritize when collecting vintage toys – the uniqueness of handmade items, or the durability and familiarity of mass-produced ones? And how do these factors affect your perception of their value?
