So, I saw an ELI5 post about the economic benefits of promoting "ride cultures" (bikes, scooters, etc.), and it got me thinking. Beyond the obvious environmental stuff, are there real, measurable boosts to a local economy when people ditch cars for these options?
I imagine there's a decrease in demand for gasoline and car maintenance, but perhaps an increase in spending at local bike shops and repair places. Also, if people are biking and scootering more within a city, are they more likely to stop at local businesses along the route? I'm picturing someone grabbing a coffee or pastry on thier way to work, rather than just driving straight through.
It seems like it could create a more vibrant, walkable/rideable local ecosystem, favoring smaller businesses over gas stations and highway-adjacent chains. What are your thoughts? Are there studies that show quantifiable impacts when cities actively encourage cycling and scooter use?
