Saw an ELI5 thread about vintage toy serial numbers and it got me thinking. Are they actually useful for anything beyond just knowing when a toy was made? I understand they might help track manufacturing defects or identify specific runs, but is that information still accessible for toys from, say, the 60s or 70s?
It seems like the primary value now might be for hardcore collectors to verify authenticity or rarity. Like, a specific serial number range on a certain GI Joe figure might indicate it was made in a factory with a slightly different paint application, making it more valuable.
Anyone have experience using serial numbers to research vintage toys or collectibles? I'd be curious to hear about any interesting finds or discoveries they’ve led to. I'm wondering if ther are any easily accessible online databases that correlate serial numbers with production information or known flaws, or if it's mostly knowledge passed around within collector communities.
