Saw an ELI5 recently asking why we still love old computer screensavers, and it got me thinking. Is it purely nostalgia? I remember being mesmerized by the simple bouncing DVD logo, desperately hoping it would hit a corner. or the intricate pipes screensaver that felt like building a digital factory.
Maybe it's as they represented a time when computers felt a little less demanding. Now, everything is about productivity and notifications. Back then, a screensaver was a little moment of visual calm, a reminder that technology could also be playful.
I wonder if younger generations who didn't grow up with CRT monitors and the risk of burn-in will ever understand the appeal. Are there modern equivalents that capture the same kind of low-stakes entertainment? Or is it a uniquely millennial/Gen X thing?
