Just finished breathing new life into a dusty old desktop I had in storage, and the experience was surprisingly insightful. Beyond the satisfaction of getting it up and running again (and remembering all the arcane troubleshooting steps!), it really drove home how far we've come in terms of hardware standardization. Trying to find compatible RAM was a rabbit hole of forgotten spec sheets and forum posts!
It also made me appreciate the longevity of open-source software. While a lot of the original commercial software was entirely unusable, I was able to get a lightweight Linux distro running perfectly. It's a great reminder that sometimes the best solutions are the ones that prioritize community and adaptability over proprietary lock-in.
Has anyone else had a similar experience digging up old tech? What lessons did you take away from it? I'm curious to hear if others have had similar frustrations or unexpected wins.
