I've been thinking a lot lately about the ethics of DIY building projects, especially when they start to bump up against local zoning laws. we all value affordability and the ability to customize our living spaces, and DIY offers that. But at what point does skirting or outright ignoring zoning regulations become unethical?

For example, building a detached ADU in your backyard without the proper permits can considerably impact neighborhood density and parking availability. While you might be increasing your property value and creating extra income, are you doing so at the expense of your neighbors' quality of life and the overall community plan? I saw one case where a guy built a massive deck that clearly violated setback regulations, and while it looked great, it cast a huge shadow on his neighbor's garden.

I'm curious to hear other people's perspectives on this. Is it okay to push the boundaries of zoning if you believe it's outdated or overly restrictive? Or do we have an ethical obligation to adhere to these laws, even if they seem inconvenient or unfair? Where do we draw the line between individual freedom and the collective good when it comes to DIY construction and local regulations?
