Been thinking a lot lately about the ethics of DIY landscaping, specifically its potential impact on local ecosystems. We all want a nice-looking yard, but are we unintentionally contributing to problems like habitat loss or invasive species spread? It’s easy to get caught up in wanting a perfectly manicured lawn or importing exotic plants without considering the wider consequences.

For example,I've noticed a trend of replacing native ground cover with gravel or rock. While it can be low-maintenance, it also eliminates crucial habitat for insects and small animals, and it can increase stormwater runoff as the water isn't being absorbed.Similarly, introducing non-native plants, even if they’re marketed as “low maintenance,” can sometimes lead to them outcompeting native species and disrupting the local food chain.

I’m curious what other people think about this. Are there ways to balance our desire for appealing landscaping with the needs of the local environment? Are there resources or guides you'd recommend for learning about eco-friendly DIY landscaping practices? I'd love to hear any insights or experiences related to this!
