I've been thinking about the ethical implications of increasingly aggressive bike theft prevention measures. On one hand, nobody wants their bike stolen, and creative deterrents like GPS trackers and tamper-evident bolts seem justifiable. But where do we draw the line?

For instance, what about modifications that actively damage a thief's tools, or even cause minor injury? Is protecting personal property worth potentially harming someone, even if they are committing a crime? it feels different then, say, a self-defense situation. The bike thief isn't necessarily posing a threat to your physical safety, just your property.

I’m curious to hear other people's thoughts on this. Are some prevention methods inherently unethical, or is it all fair game when it comes to protecting your belongings from theft? Is there a proportional response we should be aiming for?
