The ethics around ride-sharing companies and user safety are really complex. On one hand, they provide a valuable service, connecting people with transportation and creating income opportunities. but shouldn't they also have a responsibility to ensure the safety of both riders and drivers using their platform? it truly seems like the current system frequently enough relies on background checks and a rating system, which, while helpful, aren't foolproof. The argument against full responsibility frequently enough cites the "self-reliant contractor" status of drivers. However, companies set the rules, control the pricing, and profit from every ride. This level of control arguably creates a moral obligation. If a rider is assaulted or a driver is involved in an accident due to negligence, is it ethical for the company to simply wash their hands of the situation, pointing to their terms of service? At what point does convenience and innovation outweigh ethical considerations of safety and liability when notable potential harm exists? I'm interested to hear everyone's thoughts.
