Just wanted too share some hard-earned wisdom after finally getting my first DIY garden going (and surviving!). Looking back, there were definitely a few face-palm moments.
First, I way underestimated the importance of soil prep. I thought I coudl just chuck some seeds in the ground and everything would magically flourish. Turns out, heavily compacted clay doesn't exactly scream "grow, little seedlings, grow!" Ended up having to amend the soil after planting, which was a huge pain and probably stressed everything out. Second, I spaced everything WAY too close together. I saw these tiny little seedlings and thought, "Plenty of room!" Now I have a jungle were everything is competing for sunlight. Third, I didn't properly research my local pests. Slugs practically threw a party in my garden the first week! fourth, watering was wholly inconsistent. Sometimes I'd overwater, sometimes I'd forget completely.and this is a big one, I didn't start small enough. I envisioned this massive garden brimming with produce, and instantly bit off way more than I could chew. A smaller, manageable plot would have been a much better approach for a beginner.
Anyone else have similar rookie mistakes they're willing to share? What did you learn from them?
