It's amazing to consider how the tools we use for measurement in making and mechanics have evolved. From relying on purely analog methods like plumb bobs and rudimentary calipers, we've transitioned to digital readouts and laser-guided precision. This progress has not only improved accuracy but also drastically reduced the time required for complex projects.

Thinking about it, even the simple ruler has a fascinating history, evolving from standardized body parts (cubits, feet) to the finely graduated instruments we have today. And the leap from mechanical micrometers to digital versions capable of measuring to the thousandth of an inch highlights just how far we've come.

What measurement tool advancement do you think has had the biggest impact on the maker/mechanic world, and why? I’m personally intrigued by the impact of affordable 3D scanners on reverse engineering and custom fabrication possibilities, but I'm curious to hear other perspectives.
