Has anyone else found that learning to code on older computers, like a commodore 64 or even something running DOS,provides a surprisingly solid foundation? I started with modern languages, but struggling with limited memory and processing power really forced me to understand how code translates into actual machine operations.

It's almost like learning to drive a manual car before an automatic; you gain a more visceral understanding of what's happening under the hood. Simple things like string manipulation in BASIC become much clearer, and the limitations make you think critically about efficiency in a way that modern, abstracted languages sometimes don't demand.

I'm curious if others have similar experiences, and what resources they'd recommend for someone looking to explore this kind of learning. Are there any particular vintage machines or languages that you found particularly effective for building core programming skills?
