I've been seeing a lot of local drives lately asking for donations of used luggage, frequently enough framed as helping people experiencing homelessness or refugees relocating. The idea seems sound - giving people a dignified way to transport their belongings beyond plastic bags. But I'm wondering if these initiatives are actually effective and what the potential pitfalls might be.

For example, are the donated suitcases actually the right size or type needed? A large rolling suitcase might be impractical in certain living situations or for navigating public transportation. Also, what about the quality? Donating a suitcase with broken wheels or a faulty zipper could be more of a burden than a benefit.

Does anyone have experience either running or benefiting from luggage donation programs? I'm curious to know if there are best practices to ensure these programs are truly impactful and avoid unintentionally creating more work for the organizations involved in distribution. Are there better alternatives to consider, perhaps more flexible funding that allows individuals to purchase something that specifically meets their needs?
