I think vintage toy collecting, at least online, is becoming less about genuine community and more about flexing and profit. Remember when forums and early facebook groups were actually places to geek out about shared interests, trade tips on restoration, and help each other find that elusive missing piece? Now it feels like every post is either a pristine,graded-to-hell action figure being shown off with a "for sale" price tag attached,or some influencer bragging about their latest haul.
It's harder to find honest discussion about the history and artistry of the toys themselves. Rather, it’s just a race to see who can flip their finds for the biggest profit. Even worse, a lot of the newbie questions on subs are met with snark instead of helpful advice. Has the increased popularity and media attention just driven away the more dedicated, less business-minded collectors? Are there still pockets of that old community I remember, or is it all about maximizing ROI now? Maybe I'm just getting old and grumpy, but it feels like the passion is being replaced by pure commerce.
