It’s so frustrating when you see someone in a collecting community flaunting a rare find – like a mint condition first edition book or a perfectly preserved vintage toy – but then clams up when anyone asks for tips on how they found it. A lot of teh fun in collecting is the hunt and the shared knowledge, right? When someone’s success is presented more as a way to show off their superior skill, rather then an opportunity for communal education or a shared thankfulness, it feels really gatekeeping. Are they afraid other people will start competing with them? Is it just a personality thing? I get wanting to celebrate a great find, but withholding details feels contrary to the spirit of moast collecting communities I've been a part of. It turns collecting into a competition rather of a collaborative passion. It'd be cool to hear what other people think - have you encountered this, and how did you react?
