I saw an ELI5 post about why tech nostalgia is so powerful, and it got me thinking. I wonder if part of it is that tech advancements are so rapid now, the "old" stuff feels incredibly distant, even though it might only be a decade or two. Like, remember dial-up? Seems like ancient history, but it wasn't that long ago. its easy to forget the frustrations (the awful connection speeds, the screeching noises), and only remember the simpler aspects, like having a dedicated phone line just for the internet.
Another thought is that early tech experiences are frequently enough tied to formative periods like childhood or adolescence. Getting your first computer or gaming console can be a really meaningful memory, and those feelings of excitement and discovery get linked to the technology itself. So, when you see an old Nintendo or a Palm Pilot, it’s tied heavily to the memories of being younger and maybe having fewer responsibilities. Does anyone else feel like the rapid pace of change is a big factor, making older tech feel extra-nostalgic?
