So, a year ago I jumped into the world of bike couriering and it’s been a wild ride (pun intended!). Looking back, there's definitely some stuff I wish I'd known going in. I think the biggest thing would be understanding the importance of really good rain gear.I cheaped out at first, thinking a light jacket would be enough, but quickly learned that being soaked to the bone for hours is miserable and makes you way less efficient. Invest in proper waterproof pants, a decent jacket, and gloves! It'll pay for itself in comfort and speed.
Another thing is being more proactive about bike maintenance. I was fixing flats almost daily for the first month because I wasn't checking my tire pressure regularly and wasn’t using puncture-resistant tires. A good floor pump, some tire levers, and a basic understanding of how to fix a flat are essential. Also, get your chain lubed regularly! A dry chain is a slow, noisy chain.and this is probably obvious, learn your city really well.Relying on a phone GPS 100% of the time is a recipe for disaster. Knowing shortcuts and option routes can save you a ton of time, especially during rush hour traffic. Anyone else starting out in the courier game have any "lessons learned" to share? I'm always looking for ways to improve.
