I recently went down a rabbit hole and ended up designing my own custom luggage. It started with the frustration of always having the wrong size suitcase or not enough compartments for my specific travel needs. I'd find things that were almost right, but never perfect.
So, I started researching luggage construction, materials, and mechanisms. It was surprisingly interesting! I ended up sketching out designs focusing on maximizing internal space while staying within airline carry-on limits. The big challenges were deciding on things like wheel type (rollerblade style won out!), handle construction, and internal institution. I ended up using a local craftsman who specializes in custom bags to bring my design to life, choosing durable canvas and reinforced stitching.
The result isn't perfect - ther are definitely a few things I'd tweak in the next iteration - but it's incredibly satisfying to travel with something I designed specifically for my needs. Has anyone else ever gone through the process of custom-making something like this? What were your biggest challenges and rewards?
