I'm about to start a basement renovation and am trying to figure out the most cost-effective ways to reduce sound transmission. It's going to be a multi-purpose space – home theater, maybe a small music area – so minimizing noise going out (and coming in!) is crucial. I'm not looking for studio-level perfection, just something that will considerably cut down on the noise impacting the rest of the house.Has anyone had success using cheaper alternatives to professionally installed soundproofing? I've been reading about things like mass-loaded vinyl, but the cost seems to add up quickly. Are there more affordable options that provide a decent return? I'm thinking along the lines of thicker drywall, strategically placed insulation (rockwool seems popular),and maybe some DIY acoustic panels?

Specifically,I'm curious about tips for soundproofing the ceiling,as that seems to be the biggest point of sound leakage upwards. Also, any advice on effectively sealing gaps around pipes and ducts without spending a fortune would be much appreciated. What did you try? What worked, and what was a waste of money?
