I've been thinking a lot lately about how luggage design subtly impacts travel behavior. It's more than just wheels vs. no wheels, or hard case vs. soft.Consider how the internal organization of a suitcase affects packing strategy – do dedicated compartments encourage more meticulous folding and space optimization,or do they simply lead to more stuff being crammed in? Similarly, the external accessibility of pockets and compartments likely influences what items we keep close at hand during a journey, potentially altering our interactions with the environment and other travelers.
For example, a backpack specifically designed for electronics, with easily accessible and padded compartments, probably encourages people to use and carry more tech than someone with a basic duffel bag. Thinking about the evolution from large, unwieldy trunks to compact, rolling carry-ons, it’s clear that luggage design has played a notable role in democratizing travel and shaping our expectations of what we can bring along.
I’m curious to hear other thoughts on this. What aspects of luggage design do you think exert the most influence on how we travel, and how we experience travel? Are there any specific design features you've found particularly transformative or detrimental to your travel style?
