Anyone else run into major headwinds when advocating for bike lanes in more conservative areas? It feels like the arguments often shift beyond practical concerns about traffic flow or cost, and become weirdly ideological. I've been part of a local advocacy group pushing for a protected bike lane on a main thoroughfare, and the pushback we're getting is primarily centered around "taking away parking" and "catering to a liberal agenda," even though data shows increased bike traffic would benefit local businesses.

We've tried focusing on the economic benefits – increased foot traffic, attracting younger demographics – and safety arguments (reducing accidents for everyone), but it doesn't seem to be breaking through. Some people seem convinced it's just a plot to force everyone out of their cars. Has anyone found effective strategies for overcoming this kind of resistance? Maybe focusing on specific neighborhood benefits,or framing it differently? I'm open to any suggestions or experiences you all might have. Even small wins would be encouraging at this point.
