Hey everyone, I've been running into an annoying issue where the output quality of my video conversions seems to considerably degrade depending on the input format. Such as, converting from a high-bitrate MKV generally looks fine, but trying to process some older AVI files or even some oddly encoded MP4s results in noticeable pixelation and artifacting after the conversion, even when using the same output settings.

I've tried fiddling wiht various codec settings (using Handbrake, mostly), experimenting with different encoders (x264, x265), and playing around with the resolution and bitrate, but the problem persists. It feels like some input formats are just inherently more arduous to work with, leading to a less clean result.

Has anyone else experienced this kind of input-format-dependent quality drop? And if so, what solutions have you found helpful? Are there specific pre-processing steps or alternative software that might help mitigate this issue and improve the final output quality for these problematic formats? I'm notably curious about any strategies for rescuing older or poorly encoded source material.
