I've been seeing more luggage advertised with built-in GPS tracking, and while teh peace of mind sounds great, I'm wondering if ther are some overlooked downsides. Everyone focuses on the "never lose your bag again" aspect, but what about the battery life? I'd hate for the GPS to die halfway through a trip, rendering it useless.

Beyond that, is it realy secure? Could someone potentially hack the GPS and then know exactly where your luggage (and potentially you) are at all times? It feels like adding a new potential point of vulnerability for theft or even stalking, which is a pretty serious trade-off.

think about the e-waste. What happens when the GPS technology becomes obsolete or the battery degrades to the point of being unusable? Are we just adding another piece of arduous-to-recycle tech into landfills for a relatively minor convenience? Am I being overly cautious, or are these valid concerns to consider before buying into the GPS luggage hype?
